We had a wee bit of a scare last week when Jerry went in for his clot check (a monthly routine ever since the incident last fall). His International Normalized Ratio (INR) was way down, meaning his blood was clotting way too quickly. I’m the culprit. I’ve been feeding him too many leafy greens, parsley, basil and cilantro since my return. Just about everything that grows in our garden contains heaps of vitamin K, which wreaks havoc with the goal of keeping clots out of Jerry’s legs and lungs.
Will this change our summer eating habits? No, not really. But it does change his warfarin dosage, and it gives him a lovely pair of compression socks for the bargain price of $52!
Tricky issue, this business of blood clots and diet. Read my latest story in The Faster Times.
