Thank you for this beautiful essay. I live in Boston, and in the last week have been working to grasp this tragedy alongside those happening around the world, such as those that you've described happening in Laos. You write from the heart, and I am touched by your ability to communicate the haunting experience of living in an unsafe world. I never thought I would be so close to joining this experience--going to sleep to the sound of grenades exploding on Memorial Drive and helicopters swirling overhead, I now know the fear that so many others live.
i'll enjoy reading future entries.
best, claire

Welcome, and thanks for your question - is the dish you're describing a salad? A fritter?
hello Karen, I am from Indonesia .... I've lived in burma for 1 year starting mid-2002, I worked as a consultant in shrimp ponds, first I feel less fit as most Burmese dishes tasted sour, but over time get used too, now I so wanted to enjoy Burmese cuisine, one that I like is a mixture of dried shrimp fried novelties, chili powder, fried onions mixed into one, I forget this name, can you give the recipe to me, I would be very grateful,,, ,,

Very eloquent. The bombie you reference in the last paragraph is one of the cluster bombs, right? Such weapons are not strategic weapons to interdict enemy armies or their supplies or factories, but anti-personnel weapons, meant to strike terror. I don't know if they were the first to use them, but the Germans dropped thousands on Britain during WW2, many with delayed fuses meant to go off after people left their shelters when they thought the threat was over. The purpose of the "cluster" was to string together many such weapons so they would drape over tree limbs, power lines, fences, etc. and explode onto individuals, making it more likely they could not avoid the blast. Not a good recommendation for our military minds adopting the technology.
